Created at the start of the Nineteen Sixties and ceasing production during the start of the Nineteen Seventies, a unique type of American Car appeared , and almost instantaneously became widely desirable , particularly with boy racers , before disappearing rapidly from demand to become a sought after Classic – This was the so called ‘Muscle Cars’.
Muscle Cars as their name suggests because of their powerful performance motors and ridiculously quick acceleration.
Many of these muscle cars were designed with V8 or V12 motors generating over 300 to 400 bhp and thus were invariably very expensive and costly to insure .
Muscle cars were usually fitted with high performance engine parts such as specialist multiple valves , overhead cams , intake manifolds advanced carburettors and free flowing exhaust systems that generated greater engine power and due to this – higher car insurance premiums
American performance cars manufactured before the Nineteen Sixties were commonly the heavy top of the range autos fitted with the marques developed engines .
The exclusion to this was the Corvette , America’s first sports car built in 1953 . During 1962 the Corvette was fitted with a V8 engine throwing out 327 hp and became the first of the class of two seater US Muscle cars, replacing the much bulky top of the range models .
When Ford Mustang was shown to the public for the first time in 1964 other car builders were quick to follow and led to most of the muscle car market being controlled by small autos cars fitted with big V8 engines which went under the less powerful name of ‘Pony Cars’, although there were many exceptions as older classics such as the T-Bird were upgraded with larger more powerful engines .
The Muscle car period ended The last Muscle Car was built in the 1970′s with the Global oil crisis and petrol rationing , which when coupled with high insurance and emission controls, led to a downgrade of some engines and the Muscle Car passed into history as some of the greatest American Sports Cars ever manufactured .
